On August 7, 2025, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) posted NOT-OD-25-142: Update on No-Cost Extension Functionality in eRA.
This notice provides an update on the previous guidance issued in NOT-OD-25-110. As of this notice, NIH has re-enabled the No-Cost Extension functionality within eRA Commons. Recipients are now able to initiate their first no-cost extensions directly through the eRA Commons Status module, in line with the NIH Grants Policy Statement (Section 8.1.1.3).
For previously submitted NCE requests through the prior approval module, the notice states, “Requests that were previously submitted via the prior approval module will be reviewed, and recipients will need to initiate the first no-cost extension within the Status module by using the Extension action.” At this time, we believe no action is required on your part but will follow up with those impacted as we receive additional clarification.
