Questions to ask PIs and Senior/Key Personnel about Other Support

Research Administrators must obtain key information necessary to complete the Current and Pending (Other) Support section of applications. Below is a list of possible, pertinent questions to use to facilitate conversations with PIs and Senior/Key Personnel regarding the different aspects of the Current and Pending (Other) Support portion.

Current

Summary Question

What resources, funding, and/or support (from any source—even outside of WashU) have been made available to you to conduct, or develop, research? This includes current research projects, endowments, gifts in support of research, prizes or awards that support a research project, and foreign sponsorship.

Gifts, Donations and Startup Funds

Will you, your research, or this project be receiving start-up support or monetary (or non-monetary) gifts—even if that support has been given to another PI or routed through a third-party foundation or pass-through entity?

Endowments

Does your endowed professorship come via a grant, a gift, or receive support from the Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJHF)?

Engagement in External Research

Are you involved (or planning to be involved) in the design, conduct, or reporting of research through an affiliation or consultancy?

Foreign and Anonymous Sponsorship

Will you be receiving any support regardless of monetary value (funds, equipment, materials, or salary payments for staff) from a foreign or anonymous source?

Industry-Sponsored Clinical Studies/Trials

Are you currently involved in any industry-sponsored or industry funded clinical trials?

Domestic Research Collaborations

Are you engaged in any on-going research collaborations (not limited to collaboration on a particular grant) with any other domestic researchers?

  • If yes, what is the nature of this collaboration and how would it overlap with the current research proposal?

Pending

Summary Question

What proposals (including this one) are pending, and what other resources (similar to those currently available) may become available to you? Will there be any changes/additions to your employment portfolio/resume?

Pending Proposals

Do you have any proposals (including this proposal) under consideration for funding by any potential funding organization, irrespective of whether such support would be provided through WashU or directly to you?

Foreign Support

Do you plan to, or have you proposed any recent applications that involve foreign funding? This includes, for example, foreign support for research that does not go through WashU.

Upcoming Jobs, Position Changes, and Engagements

Will you be taking on new responsibilities that will alter your research effort or time commitment (program director roles, administrative roles, center leadership positions)?

In-Kind

Summary Question

What unique, non-financial, research-related resources (such as laboratory space or proprietary data) will be made available to you? What is an estimated dollar value for these resources

Office or Laboratory Space

Do you have access to any office or laboratory space which will not be directly involved in this project?

If yes, what is the nature of these spaces (i.e. size of space, type of lab, etc.)?

Equipment

Do you have access to equipment or supplies not made readily available to other researchers, such as unique laboratory equipment and testing machines? Will this equipment, or these supplies, be utilized on this proposal?

Unique Materials and Technology

Will you have access to, or receive, any unique materials and/or technologies for which you will have special access and directly benefits your research? What is their estimated monetary value?

Will you have special access to any unique or proprietary data (e.g., datasets, databases, or samples) provided by another entity that directly benefits your research? What is its estimated monetary value?

Outside Visitors, Postdocs, and Students

At any point during the research, will individuals such as visitors, postdocs, or students, who have external support (not through WashU), engage in any research-related activities?

Funding for Research Travel

Will you be engaging in any travel funded by another entity for research purposes that has an associated time commitment?

Overlap Statement

Are there any overlaps in aims, personnel, budget, or research outputs with other ongoing or pending awards?

  • If so, what adjustments can be made to ensure approval/compliance?
