The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has new research security training requirements for submissions on or after August 5, 2026.
Training required before proposal submission
- Covered individuals must certify that they have completed qualifying research security training within the last 12 months.
- A covered individual is any Principal Investigator (PI), Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI), and Co-Investigators
- WashU requires NASA researchers to complete Responsible Conduct of Research Online Training to fulfil this requirement for Research Security Training. Individuals must self-enroll.
- The Office of Sponsored Research Services (OSRS) will certify that all covered individuals on the application have completed training within the last 12 months.
- If any covered individuals have not completed training, the proposal cannot be submitted. This includes applications where WashU will be the incoming subaward, JITs, and any time a Biosketch or Other Support is submitted. No waivers are permitted for this requirement.
- Any researchers who are covered individuals should complete training as soon as possible to ensure there are no delays in application submission.
Training requirements for new individuals after NASA award is issued
- Any covered individual that joins a NASA-funded project after an award has been issued shall submit biographical sketch, current and pending (other) support forms, and attest that they have completed Responsible Conduct of Research Online Training.
Certification requirements
- The NASA biographical sketch and current and pending (other) support forms require an attestation for Research Security Training.
- Do not use these updated forms before August 5, 2026. Until that date, continue to use the current biographical sketch and current and pending support forms available on the NASA Grant Operations Management website under “Grant Forms.”
Additional guidance
- Completion of legacy courses PERCSS or Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research for Faculty and Staff DO NOT meet NASA’s requirement for research security training. Only the Responsible Conduct of Research Online Training fulfils this requirement.
Department administrators with reporting access to Workday Learning can run reports for the RCR course to identify who has completed training in the last 12 months.
